Principal’s Message

Our Help – In Good and Bad Times

“I lift up my eyes to the mountains – where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth,”
Psalm 121.1

Students have had the privilege of traveling to Wangaratta for swimming this term.

As we travel along the Hume and we descend down the Wangaratta side of Glenrowan, the sight of Mount Buffalo always leaves me awestruck.

It stands as a monument of the creative force of a mighty God. It towers over the lowlands around. It reminds me that if God can bring such awe-inspiring beauty into being, he is able to meet my every need.

We are coming up to Christmas. A time a joy, peace and goodwill to all. However, that is not the reality for some families who are pressed financially and challenged with mounting problems in life.

If you are facing good times or bad times this Christmas, spare a moment to look to the mountains around you and know that your ever-present help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.

Whole School

Benalla Festival Parade Success

A big thank you to all who participated in the Benalla Festival Parade this year. It was a stunning display of community from our school.

A special thank you to Lynne and Jeff Knight and parent helpers who brought a vision of ‘our backyard’ into reality. It was well rewarded with the School receiving the top award Best Theme on the day with $300 prize money.

However, the success of the day was the participation of staff, parents and students on the day all contributing to a favourite day on the calendar for ACC Hume.

Working Bee

A great thank you to staff, parents and students who attended the Working Bee this term. We were able to make our school bushfire season ready with gutters cleared, trees and bushes trimmed as well as preparations being made to accommodate the library in classrooms.

Welcome Claire Knight

Welcome Claire Knight to our staff for 2019. Claire comes with many years teaching experience in South Africa and New Zealand and further qualifications in Multi-Sensory Structured Language Education and Special Education.

ACC Early Learners 2019

ACCEL commences on the 21 January. As this is a work-in-progress, parents of ACCEL students will be contacted directly as relevant news comes to hand.

Places in Early Learners are filling, however, enrolments are still being taken. Be our voice in the community and recommend us to your friends and new acquaintances as newcomers take up new employment roles in Benalla.

Platinum Awards

Congratulations to our Platinum Award recipients Brianna Findlow, Max Drenovski, Jaxon Pereira-Stones and Sophie Humphries in November.

Preparing our Students for a Future in Technology

The school appreciates the support of parents of students in Year 2-5 who will be impacted by the Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) policy for 2019. The financial investment in technology will prove to be a valuable asset in students’ lives.

Any questions about the implementation of technology in 2019 can be directed to the school office.

Swimming Carnival

To celebrate our students’ new-found confidence in swimming, we will be wrapping up the Swimming Program with a Carnival on Friday, 7 December.

Parents and other family members are welcome to attend our Swimming Carnival by meeting us at Moore Than Swimming, Wangaratta between 12 noon and 2pm.

Parents, bring your bathers for the Adult/Student relay.

Awards Night

We will be celebrating the end of our academic year with an Awards Night at The Glasshouse. This is a time to reward all students for their efforts during the year with a Certificate of Attainment. There will also be awards of Encouragement, Improvement, Excellence, Sport and Most Merits.

Awards Night is on Thursday, 13th December. The evening will commence at 6.30 and conclude by 7.30.

Last Day Activity

The last day of school will be a fun end to the year. After some programmed activities at school, students will travel to the Benalla Rocket Park for some family orientated games, lunch and a final farewell from friends and staff.

The whole family is welcome to meet us at the Rocket Park and participate in the games. Bring a picnic lunch and spend a few hours of relaxation with us.

The school day will finish at 2pm and students can be picked up from there.

Parents are reminded to ensure their child’s uniform is ready to go for the start of the school year in January.

New Sports Uniform

A reminder that the Sports Uniform will change in 2019 and parents are advised to hold off replacing Sports items until January. The new uniform can be viewed on our website under the Uniform Guide.

Sports Shoes any colour

Due to the scarcity of all-white sports shoes in the country, ACC nationally have made a decision to allow sports shoes of any colour to be worn with the Sports Uniform.

Term 4 Dates to Remember

Term 1 Start Date

All Prep to Year 6 students will be starting on Thursday, 31 January (Summer Uniform)

ACC Youth

Students enjoyed a Dinner Dance with the Presbyterian Youth Group and a last night of games at school. ACC Youth will commence next year with a trip to Aquazone on Friday 8th February 2019.

Prep - Year 1 Class

We have been looking at aspects of the Aboriginal culture. We had fun picking fruit and eating it, collecting firewood, painting using Aboriginal symbols, listening to Aboriginal music and trying to copy some Aboriginal dancing. Sophie brought in some of her family’s real Aboriginal artifacts for us to see.

Junior Class

Our Junior Class treasures are fabulous readers and we are very proud of the progress they have all made this year. The number one key to reading success is reading every day and night. Most of the students have read more than 200 nights and have received merits and certificates. The best reward though is the gift of independent reading which is a true and lifelong joy. In class we have practised and  explored different strategies to enhance reading comprehension and this term we have worked through Reading Box as well as our Reading Response booklets.

Alison Stephens

Senior Class

Last week the students held their Term 4 market day. The majority of this term has been spent preparing for the event. The students needed to research what they were going to sell, create a budget, take out a loan, create the products, create advertising flyers and then calculate their net and gross income after the event. There was so much learning involved and so much planning and preparation went into the day. It was wonderful to see the whole school get involved and needless to say, it was a huge success!

4 Year Old Kinder Class

We have had a very busy November. Over this month the children have enjoyed their ‘Transition to School’ days with their respective schools for next year. We also had a great time in the Benalla Festival Parade, where we dressed up as older folk and pretended to be from Cooinda.

For our Road Safety day we brought our bikes to preschool and rode them around the marked roads Claire had painted on the basketball court.

The preschool class have just visited Cooinda for the last time for 2018. This was a little sad as the children all said goodbye to the special friends they had made with the folk at Cooinda.
