Principal’s Message

The 2017 School Year Marathon

I cannot get away from my favourite passage in the Bible:

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith…”

Hebrews 12:1-2

This year might seem like a marathon to our children. A year is a long time. The end is a long way off. The obstacles of learning may seem like mountains to them.

But they can do it! You, as parents, and we, as teachers, along with friends and family, can be a great cloud of witnesses as we cheer our children on to the end.

What a day of celebration it will be for a successful completion of a Prep’s first school year or a Year 6 student graduating from Primary!

2017 is a journey for our students and an opportunity to trust in God for each step they take. It is a journey of faith. And the one who can help your child more than any other is Jesus Christ, the author and perfecter of their faith.

When tough times come their way, why not ask Jesus to make straight the path ahead or help them to climb that seemingly impossible mountain.

Above all else, keep persevering, keep pressing through, and keep running.

Child Safety

Children have the right to be safe and protected at school. It is important you feel confident that your child is safe and well in our care.

The school has a Child Safety Policy which is available at our website. Accompanying this policy is an Incident Report Form. Incident Report Forms can also be obtained from our School Office.

If you have a concern about the safety, the safety of your child, or any other child at school, please let us know. Complete an Incident Report Form and place it in our Suggestions Box in the School Office or make an appointment to see our Principal.

Meet the Teachers BBQ: Tuesday 14th February, 5.30-7.00pm

All students, parents and guardians are invited to meet the staff of Australian Christian College – Hume School and Preschool over an informal BBQ at the school on Tuesday 14th February. It will be a great opportunity to catch up, see how the first week went and get to meet other new parents and students. The school will provide meat, salads and drinks. We’d love to see you there!

A notice with a reply slip has been sent home with your child. Please return this by Monday 13th February at the latest with the number of adults and children you expect to join us on the night.

Parent Volunteer Induction: Thursday 16th February, 3.30-4.30pm

We would love parents and friends of Australian Christian College to participate in school activities. It could be helping out in the Prekinder or Kinder classes, reading to students in the morning or assisting with excursions, incursions, camps and sports days.

However, it is essential for all of our volunteers to know and commit to the high standards we keep to ensure the safety of our children.

All volunteers must complete a Volunteer Induction prior to working in our school. The first will be held on Thursday 16th February from 3.30-4.30pm.

If you are unable to attend this meeting but would still like to assist, please contact Lynne in the School Office so we can organise our second Volunteer Induction at a time that suits you.

Working Bee: Saturday 18th February, 9.00am-12.00noon

We will be conducting a Working Bee each term this year. Our first will be on Saturday 18th February from 9.00am-12.00noon.

Our primary task will be to top up the Preschool and School sandpits, spread bark chips on the playground, weed gardens, clear gutters and give the grounds a general tidy up.

Please bring a wheelbarrow, shovel, garden tools and gloves and prepare for a great time of fellowship and fun (perhaps a little bit of sweat too).

Morning Tea will be provided.

Prep (Foundation)

School Days…School Days….

We had nine very excited Prep children start their formal educational journey this last week. They all looked lovely in their uniforms and have settled in really well and adjusting to school routine. This term the Preps will be taking home a picture story book each night for their parents to read to them. Three mornings a week, the Junior class are involved in Investigations, where the children select educational activities to undertake.

Year 1 & 2

The Year 1’s and 2’s have had a brilliant start to the year. This week, we have begun to work separately from the Preps which has allowed us to establish our 1/2 reading and spelling routine, and begin working on Year 1/2 Maths. This week in Maths we have begun looking at larger numbers up to and beyond 100. We have enjoyed playing games and working in groups and pairs.

Senior class

Last year the school adopted Literacy Café as its primary method for advancing students in literacy. This system worked extremely well with exceptional results across all year levels with reading comprehension and vocabulary.

When students entered the Senior Class on Monday, they knew exactly what to do and began effective reading from Day One.

We also welcomed Jamillia to our class, who slipped into the Senior Class pattern of work effortlessly and easily found many new friends. She will be an asset to our class.

Students should be busy at home with at least 15 minutes of home reading expected and recorded in their Home Reading Diaries and at least 15 minutes in their Mental Maths books or on Mathletics.

4 Year Old Kinder

The kinder group have had a great start to the year. All children have settled in well and learnt the new routine very quickly. We have been spending a lot of time learning every ones names and learning to recognise our own name.

Outside, lots of planes and gliders have been flying over the kinder playground. The children have become interested in making their own paper planes and attaching gliders to the back of them. Our planes are a little quieter than the planes overhead!

This term we are learning all about creation and God creating our world. We read “God made the world”. This week we learnt about God creating day and night on day 1. Over the next 7 weeks we will be making our own books about creation to eventually take home. These are in the kinder room. Please come in and have a look at them with your children.

It has been great to meet some of the parents at parent / teacher meetings. If you haven’t met with me and would still like to, please see me to make a suitable time.

We are looking forward to a great year of watching your child grow, develop and learn.

3 Year Old Pre-Kinder

The first session for the year began outside with the children exploring their new environment, sandpit, bike riding and water play. Inside, more new experiences; the home corner, painting, playdough and gluing. We finished the session with a mat time listening to a story and singing some songs together. All the children were very pleased to see their parents at the end of the session; it had been a very busy morning indeed!

As the weeks unfold, I’m sure you as parents will be amazed at the development your child makes. If you have any concerns you wish to discuss about your child’s development, or any aspect of the program, please don’t hesitate to chat about things. I am looking forward to a great year of playing and learning together with your child.
