Principal’s Message

New Beginnings

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart
and lean not on your own understanding;
in all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make your paths straight.”
Proverbs 3:5-6

We are entering a new and exciting year.

For you, it may be a year of new beginnings. It certainly will be for our Preschool, Prep and other students new to our school. It’s a year of new beginnings for our new Kinder Teacher too.

For others, it may be another year along a journey already started.

Whatever it is for you, I am sure there are things you are looking forward to, but some apprehensions and fears of things unknown that may come your way.

We can all take advice from this text from Proverbs.

No matter what, we can trust in the Lord and lean on him. We can acknowledge his hand on our lives as we face the challenges ahead. And as we do this, we can watch him make straight the twists, turns and valleys along our path.

May God bless your 2017. May it be fruitful, joyous, God-acknowledging and a straight path for you.

Norm Fitzgerald,

Principal.

Parents are welcome to attend. The service should finish about 9.40am.

Meet the Teachers BBQ: Tuesday, 14 February, 5.30-7.00pm

All students, parents and guardians are invited to meet the staff of Australian Christian College – Hume School and Preschool over an informal BBQ at the school on Tuesday 14 th  February. It will be a great opportunity to catch up, see how the first week went and get to meet other new parents and students. The school will provide meat, salads and drinks. We’d love to see you there!

A note will come home with your child. Please return this with the number of adults and children you expect to join us on the night.

Parent Volunteer Induction: Thursday, 16 February, 3.30-4.30pm

We would love parents and friends of ACC to participate in school activities. It could be helping out in the Prekinder or Kinder Classes, reading to students in the morning or assisting with excursions, incursions, camps and sports days.

However it is essential for all of our volunteers to know and commit to the high standards we keep to ensure the safety of our children.

All volunteers must complete a Volunteer Induction prior to working in our school. The first will be held on Thursday, 16 February from 3.30-4.30pm.

If you are unable to attend this meeting but would still like to assist, please contact Lynne in the School Office so we can organize our second Volunteer Induction at a time that suits you.

Working Bee: Saturday, 18 February, 9.00am-12.00noon

We will be conducting a Working Bee each term this year. Our first is on 18 February from 9.00am-12.00noon.

Our primary task will be to top up the Preschool and School sandpits, spread bark chips on the playground, weed gardens, clear gutters and give the grounds a general tidy up.

Please bring a wheelbarrow, shovel, garden tools and gloves and prepare for a great time of fellowship and fun (perhaps a little bit of sweat too).

Morning Tea will be provided.

Using the School Car Park Safely

It is important that we consider the safety of our children whilst using our school car park.

Kinder Families

  • Please use the car parks along the school boundary fence.
  • Please hold your child’s hand whilst you are on the car park. Drivers will see you but may not be able to see your smaller child.
  • You will need to use this method as you are required to sign your child in and out.

School Families

  • IF YOU INTEND TO LEAVE YOUR CAR, please use the car parks along the school boundary fence.
  • Please hold your child’s hand whilst you are on the car park. Drivers will see you but may not be able to see your smaller child.

School Students Drop-Off and Pick-Up

  • If you DO NOT intend to leave your car, school parents have the option of dropping off and picking-up their child in the drop-off/pick-up area to the left as you enter the school gates.
  • Your child should exit and enter the car on the left side.
  • You may then leave by turning around the tree in the middle of the car park.
  • Please watch out for cars on your right side.
  • PLEASE DO NOT LEAVE YOUR CAR.

You may have other questions about our School or Preschool. Please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Lynne Knight in the office, or your student’s teacher, if you have any further questions.

We encourage parents to provide and prepare nutritious food for their child at school.

Healthy eating provides a platform for good learning.

We encourage fresh fruit and vegetables and healthy home-made sandwiches and wraps.

We discourage food and drinks high in sugar and packaged foods.

Please do not be offended if a staff member steers you towards healthy options as we desire only the best health and educational outcomes for your child.

Sun Smart

The school implements the Sun Protection Policy from 1 st  September to 30 th  April.

During this time students are expected to wear their broad-brimmed hat and will be encouraged to wear SPF30 sunscreen provided by the School.

Summer Uniform

Our school uniform looks quite impressive and gets many comments from the Benalla community.

We encourage our students to wear our uniform with pride.

We also encourage parents to replace torn uniforms, tattered shoes and to wash and iron student uniforms regularly.

To ensure your child complies with school policy, please take some time to read the Uniform Guide handed to you when you were fitted with the uniforms or download at http://assets.acc.edu.au/img/downloads/Unifying-Uniforms.pdf.

  • Please take special note of the requirements for shoes: black and leather. Velcroe is a great option for students who cannot tie their shoelaces yet.
  • Ensure that you check hems on your daughter’s dresses prior to the start of school as they are likely to have grown over the summer period.
  • Please also notice the grooming guide and the requirements for hair, nails and jewelry.
  • Please do not get offended if the Teacher on Duty asks you about your child’s appearance if it varies from the guidelines.

We understand the financial pressure placed on families this year who are required to buy uniforms. However, it is a requirement of the school and students are expected to comply.

Student Discipline & Behavior

It is important for all students to be safe and be allowed to undertake their education in a positive and supporting environment. We take our duty of care seriously and we require the cooperation of the full school community in providing a safe and happy school for all students.

Here is a summary of our approach:

  • Merits : Students may be awarded a Merit by a teacher for noteworthy conduct, behavior, character or effort . The award of three Merits will lead to a Gold Merit Certificate and prize handed out at our Friday afternoon Assembly. When a student reaches ten Gold Merit Certificates they will be awarded the prestigious Platinum Award at our Monday morning School Service.
  • Zero tolerance to bullying. Bullying should not exist in a Christian environment. Any bullying will be dealt with promptly and decisively. All allegations of bullying will investigated thoroughly. However, it is important to define ‘bullying’ and use it only in the right context. According to ACC Policy:

“Bullying is when someone, or a group of people deliberately upset or hurt another person or damage their property, reputation or social acceptance on more than one occasion. There is an imbalance of power in incidents of bullying with the bully or bullies having more power at the time due to age, size, status or other reasons.”
  • Demerits: If a student misbehaves and receives a Demerit, the parent will be notified at the earliest opportunity by the teacher of the nature of the incident in person, by phone or by email. The student will miss some free time at lunch or recess as a consequence.
  • After-School Detention: If a student is deemed to receive a Demerit that warrants an immediate after-school detention, or if a student receives three demerits, then the parents will be notified in writing  and the student will attend the next after school detention. The detention will end with a meeting with the Principal, the student and the parent/guardian in order to modify future behavior.
